We are introducing our new Core Values (Bold Service, City Centered, Radical Hospitality) in this month’s sermon series. Feel free to listen here and/or join us for Worship on Sundays at 10:30am!
October 15, 2017: Core Values-Bold Service (John 13:1-17) Jesus dares greatly and boldly serves his disciples by washing their feet. As a congregation who values Bold Service, “we aim to live into Jesus’ call to the bold service of loving God and loving neighbor. We practice this call through innovative and dynamic worship, and by providing opportunities for reaching out to, and being in relationship with, those in the church and the community.”
October 8, 2017: Core Values-City Centered (Jeremiah 29:4-8) God calls the people in exile to build, plant, eat, create relationships, and to seek the welfare of the city. As a City Centered congregation, “we are intentionally located in downtown Lewiston in order to be a living witness to God’s love. Therefore, we seek to be aware of and strive to meet the spiritual, social, and physical needs of our neighborhood.”
October 1, 2017: Go to Bring God’s Healing and Peace (Luke 10:1-11) Jesus calls us to go and proclaim the kingdom of God, bring healing, and share God’s peace.
September 17, 2017: Season of Creation- Wind, Sky, and Sea (Exodus 14:19-31) Moses and the other Israelites, now freed, find themselves caught between a rock and a hard place. They express that they would rather stick with something they know even though it’s horrible, rather than go into unknown territory. Sound familiar? (Watch the short video below for a classic depiction of this week’s Scripture reading)
September 10, 2017: Season of Creation- Death (Exodus 12:1-14) Death is a difficult topic that we don’t like to talk about, especially when we hear the story in Exodus where God sends a plague to kill the firstborn of Egypt. How do we deal with this and where do we find the good news? (There is a large gap for a video which we edited down for worship. Feel free to click on the youtube links below in order to view the extended video clips. If you don’t have time to watch all three, make sure you watch number 3.)
September 3, 2017: Season of Creation-Fire (Exodus 3:1-15) Through the story of Moses and the burning bush we see how God creates through fire which ignites our deepest passions, dreams, and callings. Also see the video about giant sequoias mentioned in the sermon below.
August 27, 2017: Living Sacrifice (Romans 12:1-8)- Paul calls us to offer our bodies as living sacrifices to God. What does that really mean? How do we give all of ourselves to God when our life is pulling us in a million different ways?
August 20, 2017: Who Will I Be If I Stay? (Matthew 15:10-28)- Jesus calls out a crowd for using laws, tradition, and social norms to exclude people, but when a Canaanite woman cries out to him for help, Jesus ignores her, excludes her, and even calls her a dog. What can we learn from this troubling text?
August 13, 2017: Walking on Water in the Midst of a Storm (Matthew 14:22-33)- Jesus comes to the disciples by walking on water in the midst of a storm. Peter steps out of the boat to walk on water, too but gets scared and begins to drown. Thank God for saving grace especially as we are challenged to confront overt and covert racism in the midst of our country today.
July 2, 2017: Hula Hoops (Jeremiah 28:5-9)- Judah is under Babylonian oppressive rule and the prophet Hananiah tells them not to worry because everything will be ok soon! Jeremiah hopes that will happen too, but warns the people not to be too quick to go along with something just because it sounds good or easy.
June 25, 2017: Discipleship (Matthew 10:24-39)- Discipleship is not easy and Jesus tells the disciples what they might endure as they follow him.
June 11, 2017: The Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20)- Jesus sends the disciples out into the world!
June 4, 2017: Pentecost (Acts 2:1-21 and John 7:37-39)- Celebrating the movement of the Holy Spirit and the creation of the Church! Jesus fills our hearts with living water and calls us to let love flow into the world.
May 28, 2017: Becoming One in Ministry to All the World (John 17:1-11)- Jesus prays over his disciples that they may have eternal life by knowing God and that they may be protected and become one.

March 26, 2017: Healing (Jeremiah 30:12-17)- This Scripture passage is a tough one, but it speaks to the reality of pain and suffering and shows us that we are not alone. How can we find healing in the midst of pain? How can we be honest about the hurt we might feel?
March 19, 2017: New Song, New Reality (Isaiah 42:10-16 and Luke 4:16-21)- Isaiah shares news of the unexpected Servant who will slowly and gently bring about transformation for God’s people.
March 12, 2017: God in the Dark (1 Samuel 3:1-20)- As we hear Samuel’s call to prophetic ministry we learn that God even shows up in the dark.

January 29, 2017: The Great Invitation: #Blessed (Matthew 5:1-12)- Jesus begins the Sermon on the Mount by naming those who are blessed. He names those who are oppressed and vulnerable and proclaims that they are part of the kingdom of God. This week’s challenge: Name the vulnerable and oppressed as blessed in your prayers this week.
January 22, 2017: The Great Invitation: Follow Me (Matthew 4:12-23)- Jesus starts his ministry by calling the first disciples to “Follow me.” They IMMEDIATELY leave their livelihoods to follow Jesus! This story of deep faith always amazed me and made me nervous at the same time. Are we ready to truly Follow Jesus? This week’s challenge: Commit to one concrete way that you will Follow Jesus this week. (There is a pause in the middle of the podcast for you to do the challenge along with us).
January 15, 2017: The Great Invitation: Come and See (John 1:29-42)- “What are you looking for?” asked Jesus. “Where are you staying?” asked two men. “Come and see,” said Jesus.
