Meet the Team

Rev. Dr. Steve Jones

Rev. Dr. Steve Jones

Interim Senior Pastor

Hello Calvary Church,
I’m a retired United Methodist Clergy who served the Virginia Annual Conference for 42 years. I currently live in Virginia Beach with my wife, Jan, and our rescue dog, Reilly. We have two sons: Tim and Danny. Both sons work in IT/Tech; Tim lives in San Francisco with his wife, Natalie, and their daughter, Beatrice. Danny lives in Tulsa, OK.

I have been a runner, cyclist, hiker, and reader most of my life. In retirement, I worked part-time for six years at the Virginia Beach REI, which fit with my interest in being outdoors. I’ve also been a volunteer tax preparer for the IRS VITA/TCE program. Finally, I’ve been a substitute preacher for a number of churches, and was a member and a leader of mission trips to Palestine.

In coming to Calvary UMC, I am very aware that Calvary has been in the midst of a very unusual season. I have felt called to serve over the coming nine months because of the perspective that my years and experiences provide. I am someone who has discovered that the times of unexpected transitions have often been the times when my faith in Christ has grown stronger, and I have found God to be more real and powerful than I had previously known. I hope that over these months all of us will together discover again this strength that is found in faith in Christ. -Pastor Steve.

Rev. Jan Phillips

Rev. Jan Phillips

Associate Pastor

Having been raised in a Christian home, I came to a personal relationship with Christ at a young age. My father encouraged me to share my story with anyone who would stop and listen, which sparked an evangelistic spirit within me. While in college, I had the wonderful opportunity to travel the U.S. on two ministry teams. Upon graduating with a B.S. in Performance Studies with a minor in theology, I began working at Saint Andrew UMC as the assistant music minister. During my tenure at Saint Andrew, I transitioned into the role of Director of Worship and earned a M.A. in music and worship. I am currently pursuing a M.Div at Wesley Theological Seminary, as God has called me into pastoral ministry. Being a native of New Jersey, I greatly enjoy the Jersey shore and love wake boarding and boardwalk pizza.
